6 Early Spring Ways to Clean Up Your Lawn and Landscape
We're spending more time than ever in our homes. Our homes turn into our office and school between Zoom conference calls, online learning for the kids and managing piles of laundry. That lack of division of space and additional multitasking can make focus difficult and tests our mental fortitude. Now is a more important time than ever to have a sense of peace in our homes. Our outdoor spaces are the perfect place for fresh air and serenity in the midst of the chaos. Creating that space isn’t complicated so let's go over a few easy spring landscape cleanup items that can have a big impact on both curb appeal and your sanity.
Remove fallen twigs and branches as the first step in spring yard clean up. If you have many trees in your yard and haven't had them trimmed lately, you'll likely have lots of little twigs and a few branches to clean up. It'll save you wear and tear on your lawnmower once the grass needs to be cut.
Rake out leaves from up against the house. Even though fall leaf cleanup was completed months ago, our fierce Kansas wind can bring some of those back to the yard. There's an oddly satisfying feeling from simply removing dead leaves from your landscape beds. It will create a clean slate for new plants and mulch. Plus, you might be surprised to find early growth trying to push upwards!
Prune existing shrubs and trees. Check for winter damage and trim anything that is diseased, damaged, or dead. Damaged branches take precious growth energy away from the healthy part of the plant so it's important to carefully cut away dead and dying branches of plants and trees to promote healthy growth in the rest of the plant.
Top dress landscape beds with fresh mulch. You'll be absolutely amazed at what a bit of fresh mulch will do for your curb appeal! It visually brightens up the beds and also helps to hold in soil moisture spring rains will bring.
Take a moment of gratitude for the outdoor space you have and give yourself grace for the spring cleanup tasks you've accomplished. Life is about the journey not the destination! Appreciate what you’ve accomplished so far and reflect on future updates you dream about. What do you love or not love about your outdoor space? What plants or trees would you like to add or remove?
Plant. Now that you've taken the time to clean, trim and reflect on what you'd like to change in your outdoor space, go for it! Dig your hands and toes into the earth. Early spring is a great time to plant early blooming shrubs like forsythia, viburnum or flowering quince. They'll provide instant gratification for the spring fever you're likely feeling.
